Gossip Girl Fashion Recap: “Shattered Bass”

By Francesca Claybrook

Is it wrong of me to say that Gossip Girl’s Blair-centered plotlines are much more interesting than the Serena-centric ones?  Serena’s problems always seem to shoot off into the extreme in a completely unrealistic way (duplicate Serenas at a party trying to simultaneously drug the real Serena and ruin her reputation, driven by a revenge-driven girl whose brother Serena’s mom put in jail?  Really?), while Blair’s problems (equally unrealistic when you think about them), are just way more interesting.  But maybe I’m biased because I like Blair better as a character – anyone who becomes Audrey Hepburn in her dreams is good by me.  And now that I have that out of my system, let’s move on to the clothes in which our heroines must navigate the drama of the Upper East Side.

Serena had a good episode this week.  I really loved the purple dress and the chunky necklace shown above, even if I can’t come up with a good reason why she should be wearing such a fancy outfit in the middle of the day.  It actually would have made a good dress for Blair’s engagement party, because while I did like the color and style of the bright dress she picked out for that for the most part, the chiffon slung around her back was a little weird for me.  And speaking of inappropriate outfits, did Raina really need to wear a one-shoulder cocktail dress to meet with Jack Bass?  Although in the notes I made while watching the show I felt the need to remind myself that this is Gossip Girl so really, why do I even bother noting the bizarrely formal ways some of the characters dress?  While we’re on the subject of Raina though, the dress she was wearing at the end of the episode was drop dead gorgeous.  Whoever keeps putting her in bright colors is a genius, because they look amazing on her.

Oh Blair.  I just defended your antics as unbelievably believable, and then you have to go ruining what could be a gorgeous dress with odd fabric shoulder details…for the second episode in a row.  And while I’m at it, stick to slimmer coats like the white one at the top of this post, which fit your body way better than the bulky, boxy thing you had on at the end of this episode.  Princesses-to-be deserve way better.

Up next week:  the season finale.  Get ready for Georgina’s return to the Upper East Side and Charlie’s apparent return to crazy.  Get excited!
