Top Trends From the Fashion Weeks

By Francesca Claybrook

Fur was everywhere this season, in all four cities and on tons of runways.  And it was also literally everywhere:  fur could be found covering all parts of the body, from the arms, the torso, the neck, the head, the legs, and even the hips at Miu Miu in a sarong-like fur wrap.  The picture above was one of my favorite looks at Fendi, one of the shows where fur really stood out, but this material really made an appearance on too many runways to name.  A look I particularly liked was the fur scarf, which will be a great way to incorporate the fur trend into your own wardrobe, especially if you’re wary of a full-on fur coat.

Bright colors graced the runway at Jil Sander, Givenchy, Matthew Williamson, Gucci, and Proenza Schouler (among others).  However, these brights often came mixed among a lot of blacks and other neutral colors – for example, the Givenchy look shown above was the only really bright outfit to walk that particular runway.  The moral of the story?  Don’t depend only on brights for your fall wardrobe, but mix them in with other colors.

Hats were another constant from one city to the next.  Lanvin (pictured), Dior, DSquared2, Nina Ricci, and Catherine Malandrino were among the designers who showcased big floppy hats, often pulled so low they obscured much of the model’s face.  Some were more ‘70s-inspired while others looked a little more Carmen Sandiego.  Other designers also prominently featured different styles of hats (Louis Vuitton, for instance, or Burberry Prorsum), but the biggest hat trend is the big, floppy, wide-brimmed one.

Lace made an appearance on more than a few runways as well.  Sometimes the lace was used as an accent (like the dress pictured above from Pucci, which I loved) while other times it was the star of the show. Jason Wu’s collection, for example, had gorgeous elements of lace throughout, often paired with another of this season’s popular fabrics…

chiffon!  The ballet-inspired garments are still here, whether overtly inspired like this look from Dior, or in the fabrics and flow of the pieces.  The most obvious demonstration of this inspiration is the use of chiffon, which made an appearance on a number of runways.

Belts are the other most important accessory to have on hand.  Mostly skinny, these belts are especially important if you have something bulky on, because they draw the fabric into your body, accentuating your figure rather than overwhelming it with tons of fabric.  But even if you’re not wearing something with a lot of excess material, it’s still a chic way to add interest to an outfit.  Marc Jacobs, Jason Wu, Prabal Gurung, Prada, Valentino (pictured), Burberry…I could go on.  But instead I’ll leave it at this:  if you don’t own a belt that accentuates your waist, go get one immediately!
