New York Fashion Week Runway Recap: Derek Lam

By Francesca Claybrook

Derek Lam’s Fall 2011 collection was lighter and more colorful than some of the others I’ve reviewed so far this season, but there were still some constants:  black, gray, red.  I liked many of the pieces he showed, but the coats really stood out.  There were structured coats, classic coats, and oversized boxy coats that were very similar to some menswear looks that were just shown, and I’d like to own pretty much all of them.  (Well, maybe except for the really boxy ones).

This gray coat is just stunning.  It’s simple and chic, but the collar adds an element of interest.

Lam used this tweed fabric in several looks, but I particularly liked this pencil skirt, especially paired with a motorcycle-inspired jacket that adds an edge to the look.

I like the plaid pattern very much, and I’m also a fan of the low-key hair and makeup on the models.

While I myself wouldn’t wear the two-tone pants, I do really want that blue coat.  (I told you, it was the coats that really got me!)

The front row was studded with fashion-industry heavy hitters like Anna Wintour and her daughter Bee Schaffer, Nina Garcia, Joe Zee, and Simon Doonan.  To see Lam’s entire collection, click here.
