Gossip Girl Fashion Recap: The Kids Are Not All Right

By Francesca Claybrook

Welcome back Gossip girls (and guys)! We are back and ready to take on a whole new set of episodes. Let’s start at the beginning, where Blair looked perfectly buttoned up in a black dress with a sparkly collar. I was unsure about Serena’s outfit. And actually, upon revisiting still shots of Blair’s outfit I was less sure that I liked that one too. Was it a short sleeved jacket and skirt combo? With sparkly gold sleeves? And a big gold neck bow? Hmmm. Apparently I hallucinated a better outfit onto her in the time between when I watched the episode and when I sat down to write this post, and I really wish she had gone with the outfit in my head instead. The outerwear on this episode (and the show in general) was really good, with the exception of Blair’s green coat/paisley scarf ensemble. First of all, the coat was way too voluminous – not in a fashionable way, in a “this coat makes you look way bigger than you are” way – never good. Plus, the paisley scarf sends the look towards “old lady” rather than “boho chic,” something Blair would never be anyways. Serena’s plaid coats were both nice, but I have to say that I for one am not on board with the over the knee boot trend, so those ruined her second plaid coat of the episode for me. Nor was I a fan of anyone’s outfit at Russell Thorpe’s party. Lily’s was especially bad, and while I wasn’t so sure about Blair’s, when it comes to her outfits I tend to lean towards liking rather than disliking them. I think this has more to do with my love of the character Blair than anything else (this goodwill also extends to Leighton Meester in general – I often find myself trying to rationalize some of her more bizarre looks because I want to like them, even when they’re really bad. So even though most of this post has been spent criticizing Blair’s outfits, I still love her and can’t wait to see more next episode.)

In the end, the fashion didn’t work out that well in this episode, but I was still left with a good feeling about the show. I think most of it has to do with my excitement over (SPOILER ALERT) the new Dan and Blair as possible friends (or more?) angle they have going – the interactions are priceless, and I just want to see more! Plus, I love the idea of Blair as the new Anna Wintour/”dictator of taste.” It’s the perfect career choice for her!
